Trichocereus pachanoi

Botanical name: Trichocereus pachanoi
Better known as: San Pedro, Aguacolla, Huachuma, Achuma, Giganton
Family name: Cactaceae
Natural habitat: Andes-gebergte (Peru, Ecuador)

The Trichocereus pachanoi cactus is commonly known throughout the world as the San Pedro. The san Pedro has 4 – 8 ribs. Most San Pedro’s have 6-8 ribs. The San Pedro cactus grows in nature in the Andes of Peru and Ecuador. It mainly grows in the somewhat colder regions and at higher altitudes.

The San Pedro cactus contains, just as the Peyote, the psychoactive alkaloid mescaline. But it does not contain such high amounts of mescaline as the Peyote cactus. Until today it is still used by medicine men in (northern) Peru for making diagnoses of diseases of their patients.
When a San Pedro has only 4 ribs (which is very rare), this is considered as the strongest psychoactive one and best used in religious rituals. This is because shamans see these 4 ribs as the 4 wind regions and the 4 season tides.

Unfortunately we can not ship live cactus plants outside the European Union.
Cultivation
The San Pedro cactus is a fast and easy grower and can be easily grown from seed. It tolerates a lot if it comes to his ideal growing circumstances. This makes this cactus perfect for the beginning cultivator. Under normal circumstances it will grow about 30 centimeter each year. In the summer it needs a lot of sun. A few hours of direct sunlight and the rest of the day indirect sunlight is the optimal sun exposure. When the roots have fully established it needs only a little bit of water. Standard cactus soil can be used very well for this specie.
Usage
Unfortunately we can not ship living plants and cacti outside the European Union.
