Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical tree or shrub that usually grows up to a height of 3-4 meters, although it is not impossible to grow as tall as 12-16 meters. Its natural habitat stretches from Thailand and from the Northern Malaysian Peninsula to Borneo and New Guinea.
In Thailand kratom has been used since hundreds of years as a substitute for opium. There are some reports from the nineteenth century which mention its traditional use in Malaysia as well.
Traditionally the dried leaves were smoked, chewed, made into a tea or made into an extract.
The leaves of Mitragyna speciosa contain numerous indole alkaloids. The main active constituent is mitragynine (66% of the total alkaloid mixture).
Describing the effects of kratom on the mind is at least paradoxal. It can be, simultaneously, as stimulating as coca and as sedating as opium. Users of this herb describe the effects as stimulating and euphoric, others feel happy, strong and active, with a strong desire to work. The mind is described as calm. The first effects may already be noticed 5-10 minutes after consumption and can last for several hours.
